Delta State is in the south-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Fondly referred to
as “The Big Heart”, I would say the people indeed have big
expressive hearts. Deltans are peace loving, hospitable and warm people. Despite tribal differences, the state has managed to keep its peace in recent
times.

Itsekiri Tribe
The Itsekiri tribe is found in 3 LGAs in
Delta state namely: Warri North, Warri South, Warri South-West LGAs. They are
also found in Ondo and Edo state. They are related to the Yoruba tribe
especially by their language which is a mixture of Yoruba and Igala language without
any dialectal variation among the towns and villages that make up these regions
which is quite unique and astonishing.
They are fondly referred to amongst themselves as the Iweres (Kingdom of
Warri) They are predominantly Christians of the Catholic Church and in history,
were mainly fishermen, even if today their part of the state is the centre
for industrial and commercial activities in the state. Population estimate of
the Itsekiri people
is about 1 million people.

Isoko Tribe
This tribe comprises 2 LGAs: Isoko North
and Isoko South. They speak the Isoko language which is largely similar to the Urhobo
language. Farming used to be the occupation of the people but with a lot of
crude oil explorations in the area, farming is now reduced to an extent in the
area. The Isoko people are more traditionalist than any other tribe in Delta
state. There are also Christians in the area, but there is quite an obscure
line there, since most Christians there, also practice traditional religions.
Cassava is the main food of the Isoko people in varying delicacies such
as Garri, starch meal,
(Ozi) and Egu.

The Urhobos are in 10 LGAs in Delta state. These include Ethiope east,
Ethiope West, Okpe, Sapele, Udu, Ughellis North, Ughelli South, Uvwie, Warri

estimate of about 2 million people. Their culture is quite similar to that of
the Isoko people and used to be referred to together as the Sobos. The most
predominant occupation in the region is fishing and the Urhobo people are
widely known for their fishing and swimming contests. The Urhobos have a lot of
delicacies such as Ogbono soup, Oghwevwri (emulsified palm oil soup), Ukhodo
recipe (a yam and unripe plantain dish, spiced with Lemon grass and potash), Amiedi
or banga soup amongst others. The Urhobo people are still quite traditionalists
even if Christianity exists in the region, but Christianity is fast gaining a foothold in the land.
