and has been a home to many Nigerian leaders both past and present. The Shiroro
and Kainji dams are located in the state. These two dams are two of the major
hydroelectric power stations in Nigeria. The state has 25 Local Government
Areas with many tribes.

Kambari
The Kambari tribe is a well-known tribe in Niger state, even
though they have been seen to be forgotten by the Nigerian Government. They can
be found in Magama, Mariga and Agwara LGAs in Niger state. Others can also be
found in small settlements in Wushishi and Rijau LGAs of the state. Men and
women still dress half naked and only 3% of the people are literates as parents
consider sending their children to school as a waste of time and resources
because they prefer the children to help them with farm works. Their population
is estimated at 149,000 residents.

people is the Islamic religion with a few still practicing their old
traditional religions. They have been ruled by other tribes for hundreds of
years. The people of Ura are mainly farmers and potter. The population of the
Ura people is about 1700. The language the people speak is known as Fungwa
language.

The Kanuri tribe can be regarded as the third largest tribe
in the Northern part of Nigeria. The kanuri tribe consist of other sub-tribes
such as the Manga Kanuri, Yerwa Kanuri and several other sub-tribes.The origin
of the Kanuri people can be traced to the Kanem-Bornu Empire. Many of the
Kanuri people still live in Borno state. The Kanuri people can still be found
in large numbers in Cameroun, Chad and Niger Republic. Majority of the Kanuri
people practiced the Islamic religion with only about 2% Christians among them.

45,000 native speakers. It is a popular belief among the Gwandara people that
they can transform themselves into hyenas.

The Gade Tribe is believed to have moved from Sudan to Kano
state before finally settling in their present locations in Niger state. The
population of the Gade people is estimated at about 119,000 people. Their major
occupation is farming and most of them practice Islamic religion. They can be
found in communities in Tafa LGA of Niger state.
